Virgin’s pet project takes off

AVIATION:

Virgin Australia says it has decided to mesh its new policy covering carry-on luggage with its previously announced plans to allow pets to travel on board with their owners.

The airline has announced that it will ease the weight limit for carry-on baggage from 7kgs to 8kgs. (below)

Virgin CEO, Dave Emerson, said the airline had made the change to ensure the smoother implementation of its decision to allow dogs and cats to fly with their owners on some routes from today.

“Originally we announced plans to allow pets to fly on board with their owners,” Mr Emerson (below) said.

“In its initial form that policy would have seen animals taking up space in the cabin and in turn we needed to designate specific seats for pet owners,

“But just recently we realised we could avoid the need to set aside individual seats for pet owners and their animals if we allowed their dogs or cats to fly in overhead lockers. (main image)

“Under the new system applying from today dogs or cats can travel in overhead lockers as long as they weigh 8kgs or less.”

Mr Emerson said the new arrangements would guarantee passenger comfort.

“We had always set out to design the new pet travel policy with eye on the comfort of other passengers,” he said.

“We were planning to insist that all dogs or cats should, shall we say, fly with their cargo holds empty which meant their owners would need to vouch that their animals would not void their bowels mid-air.

“The meshing of our two new policies means any such assurances are not needed since dogs or cats will now be able to extrude a rancid coil mid-flight in the overhead lockers.

“Other passengers sharing the locker will just need to keep an eye out for it when they retrieve their carry-on luggage on landing in case motions have shifted during the flight,” Mr Emerson said.
