Bibi throws a spanner in the works

THE MIDDLE EAST:

TEL AVIV: A last-minute change proposed by Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, to the Gaza peace proposal may threaten the in-principle support for the plan by terrorist group Hamas.

The 20-point plan was announced earlier this week by Mr Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump and overnight Hamas was reported to support the plan pending negotiation on some key issues.

But this morning Mr Netanyahu said he wanted a 21st point added to the plan or else Israel would walk away from negotiations.

“Now that Hamas is on board – in a way at least – I am proposing that Israel’s support for the peace plan is entirely contingent upon President Trump securing the Nobel peace Prize this year,” he said.

“If the Norwegian Nobel Committee doesn’t name him as the recipient of its Peace Prize next week then Israel is out of the Gaza peace process.”

The Nobel Committee is due to name its latest Nobel Peace Prize laureate next Friday in Oslo with the prize itself being presented at a ceremony in December.

Mr Netanyahu outlined the steps Israel would take in addition to walking away from the Gaza peace plan.

“Bombings. Missile strikes. Ground assaults. All such responses can be expected if Donald Trump is ignored by what will surely be shown to be an antisemitic Nobel Committee,” he said.

“And that’s just what’ll happen to the Nobel Committee offices in Oslo.”

When asked if he was aware that Mr Trump was technically ineligible to be named as a Nobel Laureate next week because nominations for this year’s award closed on 31 January, just days after he assumed office for his second term, Mr Netanyahu responded: “That’s an antisemitic question.”

He was also asked if he were simply setting an additional and deliberately unattainable criterion to the current peace proposal that when not achieved would give him an excuse to continue his campaign of genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.

“That’s an antisemitic question,” he again responded then winked and added, “Besides, I don’t need an excuse.”
