LONDON: Prime Minister, Sir Anthony Albanese, has personally explained to me why he has abandoned any attempt to transition Australia from a constitutional monarchy to a republic.
Speaking in an exclusive interview after a meeting at Balmoral Castle in Scotland with Australia’s head of state, King Charles III, (main picture) Sir Anthony told me he saw no reason to pursue a republic campaign leading to a constitutional referendum.
Justifying his position which is at odds with the Labor Party’s stated pro-republic policy, the Prime Minister said: “Even republicans like myself can be, and in my case are, very strong Charleseans.
“I think the appropriate time to discuss such matters will be after the end of this happy and glorious Charlebethan age.”
I asked Sir Anthony if he had any doubts that the royal family and the monarchy itself still represent an appropriate constitutional system for Australia in the 21st century, given the public splits in King Charles’s own family, notably the ongoing feud with the US-based Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
“The monarchy will always endure, as the current Charlesatarian era more than proves,” he replied
“I know our royal family, like any family, has its own internal dynamics. But even Prince Harry and Princess Meghan support the current system.
“I’m on very solid ground when I say that they too are Charlatans,” Sir Anthony told me.
He then stood to attention and broke into song, giving a passable rendition of God Save the King!, although he stumbled over the words of its second verse and began awkwardly substituting lyrics from the Australian TV soap opera Neighbours.
Sir Anthony became visibly distressed and swiftly threw himself under a table and used its tablecloth to hide when I commented on his voice.
“I’m sorry,” the Prime Minister said when climbing out from under the table.
“I heard the word ‘voice’ and well, you know….” he said as I nodded knowingly.
