CANBERRA: Opposition frontbencher Andrew Hastie has hit back at critics who suggest he is holding out false hope of Australia rebuilding its own car industry.
Mr Hastie denied he was cynically employing Trump-style tactics to talk up a mythical golden age of Australian manufacturing by telling voters the nation could again have its own car industry. (main picture)
“We can make Australian cars great again,” he said. “We can make our own cars for Australians not foreigners, I mean not foreign-made ones.
“We can make them white here in Australia… I mean right here in Australia.
“It might take the imposition of tariffs, but we could once again be making cars in a class all of their own – I’m talking about legendary cars like (clockwise from top left below) the Leyland P76, Holden Camira, the Chrysler Centura, and the Zeta Lightburn.

“The Liberal Party has a strong track record in reforming various industries as witnessed by the actions of the Howard, Abbott, Turnbull, and Morrison governments,” Mr Hastie said.
“It is thanks to Liberal-led federal governments that put in place the private-provider models that mean all of us can today enjoy the benefits of our well-run, affordable, trouble-free, easily accessible health care, aged care, child care, education, and training sectors.
“If we apply the same approach to our manufacturing sector who knows what we can achieve.
“As I learned when I was in the SAS and as genius former federal treasurer Joe Hockey always said ‘Who dares wins!’,” Mr Hastie said. (below)
