Bob’s browned off…

…by talk of his dark past!

Our judges of this popular weekly column shamelessly begged The Bug‘s editorial board to let them concentrate solely on feral – sorry, federal – maverick politician Bob Katter Junior’s furious and threatening attack on a journalist in Brisbane at the weekend.

And that board – with a number* of Walkley awards among their stella careers in the Fourth Estate – immediately agreed, not just for the sheer news value of the pollie/journo confrontation but the endless questions it raised and that needed to be answered.

And one of our editors summed that up brilliantly if rather coarsely: “Katter has held what is basically a National Party seat full of racists for yonks. Why wouldn’t he proudly and frequently claim his Lebanese heritage just to make sure the electors of Kennedy didn’t suspect he might be part-darkie?”

Poorly put but a bloody good point, right? We won’t even pull out the Voice referendum vote in Kennedy as locals strongly backed the racist, divisive and absurd argument that it was totally unfair to be offering something to dar… sorry, First Nations people – that whities weren’t also being offered. With twisted thought processes like that, no wonder Katter has done so well over so many election cycles.

Okay, enough of that! Bob’s bizzare outburst and threats of a bit of biffo sparked much xcremental plopping and some lovely memes such as signtst’s contribution (at top and below)

But we’ll leave the memes, many running with #BeirutBob as signtst did above, to the end and run with Xers using mainly words to void on the event itself. Here are Coalition Tea Lady with a worthy general summary, JayJay and Lynda French.

Brent Patrick, Tim Fernandez and Stephen Page came to the defence of journalism in general and Josh Bevas in particular.

Now for some more of those memes! Here are Beirut Bob, 100% Lebanese, Codex, True News Weekly, Annette M Jorgensen and jayjay again.
