David Speers rushed to hospital

MEDIA NEWS:

The ABC says the host of its Insiders political discussion program, David Speers, is resting comfortably after being rushed to Canberra Hospital after the end of yesterday’s program. (main picture)

Spokesperson for ABC TV, Tess Patton, said Speers collapsed almost as soon as the end credits of the program began to roll.

“David should be admired for the way he held himself together for most of the program after sustaining a very significant setback early in Sunday’s program,” Ms Patton said.

“His problems started not long after Insiders started and early in the interview he conducted from the ABC’s Canberra studios on Sunday with federal Treasurer Jim Chalmers who was at some outside location. (below)

“David tried his best, as he always does, to interrupt Mr Chalmers as often and as soon as possible after the Treasurer started each of his answers.

“But as viewers would have noticed, Mr Chalmers mostly ignored David’s interruptions and ploughed on with his answers, just talking over David.

“This naturally threw David. Nobody has ever tried that before. He was visibly shocked and never really recovered.

“He soldiered on for the rest of the program and regularly interrupted the three guest panellists but you could tell his heart just wasn’t in it, and he collapsed just after the program finished.”

Ms Patton said an ambulance was called and Speers was rushed to Canberra Hospital where it took several hours for him to be admitted.

“The delay wasn’t anything to do with ambulance ramping,” she said. “It was because David kept interrupting the triage nurse whenever she spoke.

“There was also a lengthy delay in completing hospital admission forms because David insisted on inserting ‘national political lead’ in the box asking for his occupation.

“Nobody at the hospital knew what the fuck that means, and to be frank, neither do I,” Ms Patton said.
