BRISBANE: Moves began this morning to have this weekend’s Queensland state conference of the Liberal National Party (LNP) impose a quota system to ensure the election of more female LNP MPs.
The proposed motion was viewed as a challenge to the party’s longstanding position against quotas while also attempting to water down its hard-line stand on transgender issues.
Sponsor of the motion, the previously unknown branch delegate Dita Putton, (main picture) told The Bug that it was important that more women were preselected in safe LNP seats.
“In the past I …, I mean we have tried to do the Right thing by women… I mean do the right thing by women,” Ms Putton said.
“But the May election showed I…, I mean we have a problem with women voters which must be addressed.
“The best way to do that is get more men…., I mean more women like me into safe seats.”
Ms Putton said her motion was very specific.
“Not only does it seek to have more women preselected in safe seats, it calls for very tall women in safe LNP seats,” she said.
“It also recognises that we, as a party, should accommodate would-be MPs who may not have been born female.
“Such people should have the opportunity to serve their community as an LNP MP, especially if they are, say, a former police officer with previous experience as an MP or even Opposition Leader, or even if they are bald.”
Ms Putton said that her motion deserved the conference’s support because she had framed it to encompass several other issues relevant to women including banning working for home, sacking 41,000 federal public servants, building nuclear power plants, and outlawing indigenous welcome to country ceremonies.
BREAKING NEWS: Ms Putton has just advised The Bug that she was withdrawing her motion from consideration after being advised it would be ruled out of order on a technicality if presented to the conference.
“Apparently I need to reword my motion to account for the fact there are no safe LNP seats,” she explained.
