Netanyahu blasts settlement critics

THE MIDDLE EAST:

TEL AVIV: Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says he can’t understand domestic and international outrage at plans for a new Israeli settlement in the West Bank.

“It’s clear the international community is not just antisemitic but also hypocritical when it comes to any action taken by Israel,” an angry Mr Netanyahu (main picture) said.

“Of course I make no such accusation against our major arms supplier… I mean our major comrades in arms in our search for just genocide …, I mean a just peace – the United States of America.

“But the rest of the world criticises our latest plans even though for years almost all of them, most recently antisemitic France, the antisemitic UK, antisemitic Canada and just this week antisemitic Australia, have all been seeking something very similar to what we’ve now proposed in the West Bank.”

Mr Netanyahu was reacting to international criticism of plans by his far-right Finance Minister, Bezalel Smotrich, for a new and illegal Israeli settlement of more than 3,000 dwellings in the West Bank.

Mr Smotrich said the new settlement to be added to other illegal Israeli settlements housing about 100,000 people on land claimed by Palestinians would “bury” any plans for a Palestinian state by dividing the West Bank and making a contiguous and viable Palestinian state impossible.

Mr Netanyahu said he was bewildered by the criticisms of the plan.

“I get no credit for taking account of the demands by antisemitic countries like France, the UK, Canada, and Australia even though I looked for a comprise and I saw Bezalel Smotrich’s plan as the perfect, perhaps final, solution to the Palestinian problem that we might also apply in the new Riviera…, I mean in Gaza too.

“Yet when we finally unveil our own Jew-state solution everyone goes apeshit,” Mr Netanyahu said.
