WASHINGTON DC: The US Supreme Court has confirmed that President Donald Trump has the power to impose the tariffs he has been using to bludgeon trade deals out of nations around the world.
The nation’s highest court has also laid the groundwork for shutting down further inquiries into the so-called “Epstein files” that threaten to engulf the President in an underage sex scandal.
A brief and unexpected written opinion released by Supreme Court Chief Justice, John Roberts (far right and centre in main picture), is being interpreted as a declaration that Mr Trump’s actions on tariffs have been in line with the US Constitution.
The Constitution formally gives Congress, not the President, power to regulate interstate commerce and impose tariffs. But in practice the Congress has passed several laws since the Great Depression of the 1930s giving the President power to negotiate various specific trade deals including tariffs, and several states are currently challenging President Trump’s unilateral approach.
Legal observers were surprised when Chief Justice Roberts alone wrote and released the new opinion because the case has not yet reached the Supreme Court.
They have also expressed concern at the brevity of the opinion which read in full: “Whatever the President wants to do to Make America Great Again is A-OK with us. Go for it bro!”
The observers have also questioned the Chief Justice’s right to issue such an opinion when he did not consult the other eight justices on the court.
But the Chief Justice’s associate said: “Any such criticisms of a legitimate anticipatory opinion are just fake news, and Chief Justice Roberts has every right, .. I mean every Right to issue his own big beautiful opinion. It’s his court anyway.”
The associate would not be drawn on the legitimacy of a second opinion authored and released by the Chief Justice which effectively ends all investigations and legal challenges that may otherwise result in the full release of all files relating to investigations into the underage sex offender, the late Jeffrey Epstein.
In his second opinion Chief Justice Roberts simply wrote: “Nothing to see here.”
