Big names vie for small part

Today I can report exclusively for The Bug reader on machinations surrounding the remake of the 1992 erotic suspense thriller Basic Instinct.

It’s already been reported elsewhere that famed screenwriter Joe Eszterhas, now 80, who penned the script for the original movie has been signed by Amazon MGM to deliver one for the new version. (main picture)

Our reader will recall the original starred Sharon Stone as an author who was also a serial killer and who lures the detective investigating her crimes, played by Michael Douglas, into a steamy affair.

Basic Instinct is best known for its interrogation room scene in which Stone’s character uncrosses her legs while not wearing underwear.

My Hollywood sources tell me that Amazon MGM insisted that the remake not be as provocative, a decision which prompted an argument with Eszterhas.

But my sources also tell me that the disagreement has now been resolved.

“There’s no way Joe wasn’t going to repeat that famous leg-cross scene,” one production insider told me.

“But when the producers stood their ground, Joe struck on the idea of writing into the scene a cameo appearance for a world famous identity. He just needed to decide who that might be.

“So he organised some screen tests using a stand-in for Sharon Stone’s character to help find the celebrity to play what he has always jokingly referred to as ‘the smallest yet biggest part in the film’.

“He wants to bring a degree of realism to the scene so he looked for someone that audiences would readily recognise as being, shall we say, anatomically correct for the scene.

“Joe has already racked up considerable costs flying in numerous potential players but finally  narrowed it down to three contenders – Donald Trump, Benjamin Netanyahu, and Vladimir Putin. (below)

“He reckons any of those three will be 100% believable as far as audiences are concerned and none of them will even need to resort to method acting or prosthetic make-up to pull it off. It just comes naturally to all of them, Joe reckons.”

While other parts are yet to be cast for the Basic Instinct remake, Sharon Stone is not yet saying whether she will ink a deal to reprise her starring role, with her agent telling me: “When it comes to anything to do with Basic Instinct, Sharon is remaining tight-lipped.

“That’s something she really wished she had done back in 1992,” the agent added.
