Trump’s pick means a fight with China

WASHINGTON DC: US President Donald Trump appears set on a collision course with China by insisting that America provides the next Dali Lama.

The current Dali Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism and nominal head of Tibet’s government-in-exile, turns 90 next weekend and this week declared that the traditional process would be used to identify his successor.

This position puts him at odds with the Chinese Government which has previously said it would choose his successor. (below)

It now also puts him at odds with the US President.

The Dali Lama has lived in exile in India since a failed 1959 uprising in Tibet against Chinese rule and is regarded as the 14th reincarnation of the original Dali Lama enthroned in the 14th century.

Subsequent occupants of the post have been determined by a worldwide search using a mix of mysticism and the interpretation of omens and interviews with possible, usually very young, successors. The current Dali Lama was born in 1935 and recognised as successor to the 13th Dali Lama in 1939.

But President Trump has said he wants to cut through that process.

“I want to Make Buddhism Great Again so I’ve already chosen an American kid to be the 15th Dali Lama,” he said in a post on his Truth Social network. (main picture)

“No need for a time-wasting worldwide search. I’ve picked out this kid and he fits the bill. He’s from a key swing state, he’s a stable genius just like me – not as big a stable genius as me, but he’ll do. Plus he just loves Big Macs and Diet Coke. So he’s got it all.

“We’ll do a deal with this kid at the right time and set him up here in the USA, not in India, maybe at Mar-a-Lago. We’ll see. We’ll see.

“If that doesn’t happen there’ll be a 200% tariff on all Lamas coming to America. Just to be safe we’ll slap the same tariff on llamas too,” he said.
