White House critical of Hegseth

WASHINGTON DC: Concern has been expressed by the White House about the combative behaviour of US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth at a Pentagon news conference called to discuss the recent US attacks on Iran.

The news conference degenerated into an abusive tirade against the media by Mr Hegseth who left the podium to physically assault numerous reporters and accuse them of being anti-Trump. (main picture)

Mr Hegseth then returned to his lectern but only to retrieve a near-empty bourbon bottle which he quickly put to his mouth and drained before smashing it on a wall and menacing media representatives with its jagged remnant.

Throughout the encounter Mr Hegseth directed a stream of verbal abuse at reporters before apparently exhausting himself and slumping behind his lectern, muttering and slowly falling asleep before snoring loudly.

When asked for comment, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt (below) said she would be speaking to Mr Hegseth about his behaviour.

“It is concerning to me, and indeed the President, that the Secretary of defence used a broken bottle to attack members of the press pool,” Ms Leavitt said.

“This is unacceptable and unnecessary when under our laws and our Constitution he could have easily armed himself with a handgun or rifle which would have made the encounter more worthwhile in terms of kill numbers.

“I’ll certainly be telling him he must do better next time,” she said.

WASHINGTON DC: US President Donald Trump is planning to appoint all of his children to senior advisory roles requiring them to work alongside him on his White House staff.

At present only two of his children from his three marriages – Donald Trump Junior and Eric Trump – have public roles running Trump business interests and often act as his political surrogate but neither has a formal government position.

His daughter Ivana was prominent in the first Trump administration but has so far played no active role in his second term. Tiffany, a daughter from his first marriage, and Barron, born to Trump and First Lady Melania, also have no government positions.

“The President is intent on changing the current situation where none of his children work with him in the White House,” a senior administration source said.

“He made the decision while flying back from the NATO summit this week.

“He is looking forward to having at least five people on his staff who can legitimately call him ‘Daddy’.

“He is also checking out how he and the First Lady might adopt a dozen or more children who would also be given White House jobs,” the source said.

TEL AVIV: Benjamin Netanyahu has welcomed comments by US President Donald Trump calling for Israeli prosecutors to drop all corruption and other charges against the Middle Eastern leader.

“Support from my good friend President Trump is very gratifying and I hope prosecutors here listen to him, otherwise more people will die, I can assure them of that,” Mr Netanyahu said.

Asked if he were threatening prosecutors with death if they persisted in their work, the Prime Minister quickly denied that interpretation of his remarks.

“No, no, no. That’s not what I’m saying,” he said. “I would never take the life of any Israeli judicial officer or threaten to do so.

“I meant that if they keep pursuing me I’ll be forced to keep killing innocent Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank and start another war with Iran if I need continuing diversions to keep prosecutors off my back.”

Mr Netanyahu confirmed that President Trump had also made a concrete offer to remove the threat of prosecution hanging over the Israeli leader.

“I can confirm that my good friend Donald Trump has offered to use his new $400 million Boeing 747 jet gifted to him by Qatar to fly the entire US Supreme Court to Israel where he would direct them to rule on, and dismiss, all of the charges I face of corruption and misbehaviour in office. I’m certainly considering that very gracious offer,” he said.
