Stadium’s fatal flaws exposed!

Could Brisbane be stripped of the 2032 Games?

BRISBANE: An exclusive Bug investigation that has exposed the total unsuitability of the proposed Olympic stadium near the CBD here has placed the 2032 Brisbane Games at great risk of being axed.

And after The Bug presented all of its damning research on the planned Victoria Park stadium’s many flaws – compiled over many months – the Games organising committee is understood to be scrambling for answers that can save the River City’s chance to shine on the world stage by hosting the world’s biggest sporting event in just seven years time. The Fitzroy River too.

The Bug’s editors-in-chief praised “probably the largest team of Australia’s top investigative reporters ever assembled” to debunk the multi-billion-dollar, 63,000-seat stadium’s ability to make the Sunshine State’s capital in any way proud on that world stage.

“We mean it wasn’t rocket surgery, was it,” the editors explained. “Once everyone at Australia’s No1 family newszine first saw images of the planned stadium, their unanimous response was: ‘How the fuck are tens of thousands of spectators going to get safely into and out of a venue almost completely surrounded by gorgeous untouched woodlands!’”

“They all saw just the one narrow pathway that ended well short of just a small part of the stadium’s outer rim.

“Lives are going to be lost when 63,000 people – well, many more when you include media, volunteers, hospitality workers and Games officials and staff – all trying to leave all at once at the end of a day and night’s events. Many will be as pissed as farts.

“And where the fuck are the many thousands of Opening Ceremony competitors going to be marshalled before they enter the stadium to march around the main athletic track? Over on the ICB and then airlifted in by helicopter when it’s their turn to march?”

The Bug understands that the organising committee has point-blank refused to revisit the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre at Nathan as a possible stadium; ditto for The Gabba and a totally unsuitable rectangular Suncorp Stadium, even though that place at least has large open public areas where people can walk about safely while admiring the Wally Lewis statue.

One senior organising committee member told us: “Fuck you for pointing all of this out!

“And if we’re forced to publicly air our intention of surrounding the Vic Park stadium with countless hectares of car and bus parking places and large pedestrian thoroughfares, those “Save Victoria Park” nutters are going to chain themselves to all those existing trees purposely depicted all around the stadium to trick them into thinking everything’s going to be okay.”
