Today I can report exclusively for The Bug reader on the clever marketing tactics behind a new US-made sitcom starring two of the world’s biggest stars that revives the title The Odd Couple and is now in the works in Washington DC.
If you think that the departure of the world’s richest man, Elon Musk, from Donald Trump’s administration and his subsequent attacks on the President’s blockbuster spending bill are a problem for the White House, then think again.
I can disclose that it’s all part of a clever marketing plan to build interest in the new sitcom starring both Donald Trump and Elon Musk.
My industry sources assure me that at least a dozen episodes of the new show are planned, with some already in the can.
I am also told that the series, being shot as an unscripted reality show, is based loosely on the hit 1970s TV comedy series The Odd Couple starring Jack Klugman and Tony Randall that was itself based on a Neil Simon stage show.
That popular show ran for five series and revolved around the hilarious interactions between two divorced men sharing a New York apartment – the slob Oscar Madison played by Klugman and the neat freak Felix Unger portrayed by Randall.
While the new Trump-Musk show is unscripted and therefore not an exact repeat of its 1970s namesake there are similarities.
It’s set in the White House which is shared by Trump and Musk, both men are divorced (several times), and one is definitely a slob while the other is definitely an on-the-spectrum obsessive. (main picture)
I can report that there was some disagreement between the show’s two stars over its name, with Trump insisting on The Odd Couple but Musk pushing for The Big Beautiful Bill.
The opening episode of the series – shot just this week – sets the scene for what’s to come by having Musk’s character walk out on Trump after an argument about the President’s huge spending bill he had just sent to the US Congress. But Trump rejected Musk’s title suggestion and naturally got his way.
When the show is screened viewers will see that the events of recent days including Musk’s “departure” from the White House and his public attacks on the Trump bill as an “abomination” are actually all part of an elaborate publicity campaign to spark interest in the new series.
But be prepared for more such publicity in coming days.
The Odd Couple is due to premiere soon on a new dedicated White House subscription streaming channel.
Trump, I am told, is prepared for attacks on the plan which will see US taxpayer funds spent on the production, publicity, and screening of the series as well as paying the huge appearance fees for himself and Musk, but with all profits and streaming-fee revenue flowing to Trump personally.
But, as usual, he will simply reject the criticisms as “fake news” in a future episode.
