Mortarboards overboard as Border Force strikes

CANBERRA: Home Affairs and Immigration Minister, Tony Burke, has refused to provide details of Australian Border Force (ABF) actions intercepting and turning back boatloads of American academics seeking asylum after escaping from Harvard University.

An undisclosed number of leaky and overloaded boats each carrying dozens of professors, lecturers, researchers, students, and other Harvard employees escaping persecution by US President Donald Trump are believed to be making the treacherous journey across the Pacific Ocean with the first arrivals at the weekend being intercepted by ABF gunboats as they approached Australia’s east coast.

Those making the trip are so eager to get to Australia that some have even been throwing their degrees and mortar boards overboard in a desperate bid to be rescued and allowed to land. (main picture)

An Australian Border Force spokesperson said only that an unknown number of boats had in the past few weeks been detected leaving Boston Harbour on the US east coast before heading south to transit the Panama Canal before risking the 15,000 kms voyage across the Pacific.

“Under the principles of the now bipartisan Operation Sovereign Borders, I can confirm that these boats are turned back in the first instance when they enter Australian waters,” the spokesperson said.

The ABF spokesperson said under Operation Sovereign Borders, none of the US academics would ever be eligible to settle in Australia.

“Most will be sent back to the USA, even though many claim their lives will be at risk if that happens.

“The others will likely be sent to PNG or Nauru where their asylum claims will be processed, but they won’t ever settle in Australia. They’ll be detained until being sent to some other shithole… I mean, some other country.”

When contacted, Minister Burke (below) would say little except that he was being kept abreast of developments by the ABF.

“The Albanese Government will ensure that these asylum seekers will be treated in the same manner we have treated similar cases in the past when dealing with people from Middle Eastern nations seeking refugee status,” he said.

“After all we can’t be seen to be hypocritical just because the people sailing from Harvard are largely white and in many cases, very rich.

“Apart from that, I won’t be making any further comment.  In line with past practices by previous governments on both sides of politics I won’t be talking about on-water matters,” Mr Burke said.
