Shattered senior Albanese government ministers have resigned themselves to just the two terms in power after one of the nation’s leading politics experts spelled out what the LNP Opposition needs to do to win in 2028.
“We had kept our fingers crossed that the Opposition wouldn’t stick to a certain path but we are now well and truly fucked,” the federal Treasurer who asked not to be named told The Bug this morning.
He was referring to a recent analysis by Sky LNPNews host Caleb Bond (above) that the only way the LNP can win in 2028 is to dump net-zero climate-change goals and continue with its nuclear power plant plans.
Bond is highly respected for his political insights, honed to the level it now enjoys largely because his mentor has always been Peta Credlin who single-handedly made Tony Abbott the laughing stock, has-been he is today.
And here are his comments that have well and truly burst any bubble of hope the Albanese government held for an extended period in office. Bond’s fear was that net zero could split the LNP asunder.
“The Nationals are now saying that they may well split from the Liberals and break up the Coalition if they can’t agree on a vision for the future,” Bond explained to his viewer.
“Whether or not they continue to support Net Zero will be a major part of the negotiations, and according to some sources, it’s line ball as to whether or not the Coalition will continue.
“If the Coalition were to break up, it would be the first time in nearly 40 years, that is the magnitude of how badly they lost the election.
“The Liberals need the Nationals now more than ever.
“Drop Net Zero, keep nuclear, and build a genuine alternative for government.”
Another senior minister who also asked not to be named stopped playing with his second-hand US Virginia-class nuclear submarine model in his Acting Prime Minister’s office to add this: “The battle against climate change and the need for cheap nuclear power got swamped by other issues during the campaign and all of us in Labor breathed a huge sigh of relief over that.
“We saw ourselves in power for, gosh, maybe four or more terms but if the Opposition under Sussan Ley heeds Bond’s brilliant advice, we’re well and truly fucked, if you’ll excuse the French.”
Another unnamed senior minister but who had a nose that looked a helluva like Chris Bowen’s told us: “We couldn’t believe our luck when the LNP’s nuclear plans got trumped by other issues.
“Three years from now when my pie-in-the-sky hopes for renewals as the sole source of our future energy needs is totally exposed when the sun doesn’t shine and the wind doesn’t blow, the Opposition is going to wipe the floor with us in 2028 if they heed Bond’s advice.
“All those capital cities now painted largely red, teal or other indie colours with that little dab of green will be swamped by a dark-blue Liberal tidal wave if the Opposition goes hard next election on the obvious need to keep burning coal and somehow keep those coal-fuelled power plants operating at great cost for some decades before those seven nuclear-power plants kick in!”
