National optometry chain Specsavers says it faces collapse following last Saturday’s federal election and the re-election of the Albanese Government.
Company spokesperson, Con Junctiva, said a huge upsurge in the past week of new customers seeking eye tests presented “a double-edge sword” for the chain.
“While it’s good to have hundreds of new clients queuing up at our outlets across the nation (main picture), they create a lot of dire problems for us,” Mr Junctiva said.
“For a start we simply haven’t enough optometrists to cope with this sudden avalanche of customers. We’ve been trying to hire extra staff but there’s a limit to the number available to start immediately and it means extra costs for us.
“The long queues of new clients mean long waiting times so we’ve had to pay to hire security guards to keep the queues orderly. People waiting a long time to see one of our optometrists have been getting very agitated and several fights have broken out which harms our good name.
“If the problem isn’t fixed soon then the extra costs we face could sink us.”
Mr Junctiva said the upsurge in customers could be sourced to last Saturday’s re-election of the Albanese Government.
“Every new client since last Saturday have said they were Liberal voters but were never previously aware of just how badly their party and its leader Peter Dutton and his Trump-like far-right agenda were out of step with mainstream Australia,” he said.
“Many of them are actually current Liberal MPs or ex-MPs who lost their seat and many are right-wing political commentators.
“But without fail they all tell us that when they expressed their view about the Libs and Dutton to friends or relatives they were told ‘Should have gone to Specsavers’.
“So now they have, and they’re creating chaos for us,” Mr Junctiva said.
