Goblet glory for defeated Dutton!

Peter Dutton’s quarter-century in politics and his dreams of living in a nice squat on Sydney Harbour may have been shattered last Saturday night but he goes out a winner as well!

And all because the former member for Dickson on Brisbane’s doorstep is now the proud owner of a special trophy struck by The Bug especially for the 2025 federal election – the Goebbels Trophy!

Interim awards of this valueless gong, struck in gold-painted low-grade lead, were awarded during the five-week campaign to the pollie who best displayed the two basic tenets dearly held by the Nazi era propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels: if you tell a lie long enough, it becomes the truth and always accuse your opponents of the very things you are guilty of!

In the first case, Dutton’s lies became truths to him and the LNP at least. Labor had a renewables-only energy policy (false!), inflation was out of control and only the LNP could bring it down (false), and Melburnians were too afraid to go out shopping (False! And didn’t that go down well in inner-Melbourne!).

And as the campaign neared its end, and perhaps sniffing defeat in the air, Dutton said he regretted not exposing all of Labor’s lies much earlier. Didn’t blush once. And this from the man who endorsed every rotten lie told by the No campaign in its racist and divisive assault on The Voice.

But it’s with accusing the other side of which you yourself are guilty that Dutton really shone.

He spent many months of accusing Anthony Albanese of being weak and ineffective yet voters finally saw this alleged strong man as possessing exactly those “qualities”.

He avoided National Press Club scrutiny and favoured cowardly suckhole interviews with his 2GB and Sky News sycophants and stayed clear of the seven electorates where he wanted to site nuclear power plants. And spent a lot of time playing the role of the long-departed practice of driveway attendants pumping fuel.

We know the Goebells Goblet will have pride of place on Dutton’s mantelpiece. It was richly deserved.
