The Murdoch media’s Sky News is promising its viewer a radically new approach to coverage of the Albanese Government’s fourth federal budget tonight.
Sky News CEO, Paul Whittaker, told me that the channel’s “after dark” commentators Andrew Bolt and Peta Credlin will anchor the coverage. (main picture)
“Andrew and Peta will break with tradition by ‘calling’ tonight’s budget in a similar manner to election night coverage,” Mr Whitaker explained to me.
“We think it’s important that our viewer knows which party has ‘won’ the budget and which party has ‘lost’.
“Not only will we give an authoritarian… I mean, authoritative view on the budget but we will be starting our coverage much, much earlier than other networks.”
Mr Whittaker told me that the Bolt and Credlin-helmed special broadcast, Woke Labor’s Risky Budget From Hell, would air from midday today.
“We recognise it’s pretty early to start a federal budget analysis program, given that other network’s won’t go to air with it until seven or eight hours later,” he told me.
“Luckily Sky News is a bit more flexible than our rivals,” he explained. “Unlike others, we don’t need to wait for Treasurer Jim Chalmer’s budget speech or for any embargo on budget information to expire.
“In fact we’ve already got our special coverage in the can. Andrew and Peta spent the weekend pre-recording the entire 10-hour budget special so it’s all ready to roll from midday today.”
Although he would not confirm it to me, I understand that Bolt and Credlin will “call” the budget fairly early in their coverage.
In fact they will say at about five minutes past noon that Peter Dutton and the Liberal Party have won the budget in a landslide.
