THE FOURTH ESTATE:
One of our nation’s most-loved newspaper columnists has quit The Sun-Herald after the paper’s sub-editors “changed my copy to make me look entirely unprofessional and just like some righters (sic) I won’t name here”.
The words are from Parnell Palme McGuinness to this platform and she is referring to her column in last weekend’s The Sun-Herald (above).
“Now it’s true that my column was largely about my huge disappointment about the way Anthony Albanese has turned out and I make it fairly plain he deserves to be turfed out at the looming federal election,” McGuinness told The Bug exclusively.
“But I’ve never wanted to be like those media righters (sic) who always come across as LNP public relations people.
“I have been particularly disappointed about how those righters (sic) have constantly pushed the line ever since the Voice referendum about how badly it damaged – and continues to damage – Albanese politically and is the main reason for his and his party’s decline in popularity ever since.
“Now, it’s also true that my column kicked off with the observations that I’ve over-estimated that cunt Albanese for much of my life, that his prime ministership has been slapstick and his fucknuckle decision to go ahead with the Voice referendum was his ‘signature failure’. But here’s what the subs did at the Herald that had me storming out in anger.
“To show what a balanced, fair and objective righter (sic) I am, I included a few pars about what a cowardly cunt Dutton was to go largely missing during the Voice campaign, letting those two traitors to One Nations people run that awful racist and divisive No campaign based on a litany of lies.
“And that when Dutton did occasionally raise his head above the parapet, it was only to screech that stupid “if you don’t know, vote No!” bullshit.
“And what did those cunts of subs at the Herald do? They cut out all that stuff, including an extra par pointing out that Albanese has paid a very unfair price for actually carrying through with an election promise, made at a time when polls showed solid support around the nation for the indigenous voice to Parliament and before the LNP opposed it for purely selfish political gain.”
Guinness told us that it was written in her contract with both weekend Heralds that her copy was never to be touched and she was to be phoned if cuts were needed.
“Even if I did overright (sic) it would have been absolutely paramount for me to decide what needed to stay in for the write (sic) balance.
“My reputation has been severely damaged here and it’s why I’m so black,” Guinness added.”
“Luckily my righting (sic) skills, on top of my reputation for fair and balanced and professional analysis, will have me picked up by another…”
Editor’s note: I think you’ve made your point. Wrap it up now and for fuck’s sake get rids of those “cunts”. Fucked if I know why you always to that!
Staff writer (unsic): Will do, boss. Sorry!
