Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has announced former Australian champion boxer Milo Kerrigan (main picture) will be the Coalition’s official media spokesperson for the upcoming federal election campaign.
Mr Dutton said the appointment followed criticisms from some sections of the media that he as Liberal Party leader had not been clear on the details of some of his policy commitments.
“People from some media outlets have reported on my commitment to reduce the federal public service but then suggest I haven’t provided sufficient details on how many jobs will go, where they’ll be cut, and when,” Mr Dutton told reporters in Canberra.
“The same goes for my plan for nuclear power plants. Some media stories say I’ve been light on detail about their cost and how they would operate, as well as how they will fight climate change, plus what we do with the nuclear waste they generate.
“Then there was the total misrepresentation of the details of my tax concession for wining and dining by small businesses.
“Milo Kerrigan – also known by Aussie boxing fans as the Brownish Bomber – is the ideal person to provide answers to all those questions.
“From now until election day I will be directing any questions about our policies to Milo.”
Mr Dutton acknowledged that the position of campaign spokesperson usually was assigned to a senior frontbencher.
“That’s certainly what both the Coalition and Labor have done in the past,” he said, “but the retirement of Simon Birmingham has required fresh thinking.
“And when someone like Milo is available, someone who can deliver exactly the sort of answers I want the media to have, then I’d be silly not to grab him and add him to the existing panel of official Liberal Party election campaign spokespeople,” he said before ending the news conference.
Reporters, unaware of any such panel, sought details of its composition only to be later provided by Mr Dutton’s office with a list of people working for News Crap Australia and Sky News.
When contacted and asked to comment on his new role Mr Kerrigan said : “Ah duh faffen a faffen a faffunargunbahhh. Fnback un ffntrack!”
