Succession star quits reboot

Today I can report to The Bug reader some exclusive news about the much anticipated return through a fifth season of the blockbuster US TV series Succession.

Yes, it’s true. Despite having previously closed off the possibility of any more episodes after the wild success of the series’ four seasons, I can report that US production house HBO is about to start shooting a new season.

Fans of Succession, known to be based on the machinations of the Murdoch family, believed that the story had ended with the on-screen demise of the central character Logan Roy and the apparent resolution of the selection of his heir to run the family-controlled global media company.

But today I can deliver the good news that season five will be on our screens in just a few months after writers delivered scripts and storylines that can still feature Logan Roy in flashbacks.

I can also break the news that, sadly, Brian Cox (below) who played the Logan Roy (or Rupert Murdoch) character so well will not be reprising the role.

He rang me yesterday to inform me of his decision following publication of a no-holds-barred interview in The Atlantic magazine with Rupert’s second son James Murdoch who dishes considerable dirt on his dad. (below)

Cox told me that the explicit and revealing content of the interview, highly critical of the senior Murdoch, forced his decision not to make a return appearance as Logan Roy.

“Everyone knows Logan is Rupert,” Cox told me. “We all got that from episode one in season one.

“I played him as a mean, malignant, manipulating, calculating, vicious, venal, self-centred, unprincipled, unethical, money-hungry, and right wing arsehole.

“I did the best I could to push all those elements of his character as far as I could without, I hope, overacting or making him totally unbelievable.

“But the interview with James Murdoch shows I was actually underplaying his character.

“I really feel that there is no way I can do justice to what people now know is the reality of Rupert Murdoch. So I told HBO I’m out for season five.”

Cox said HBO had agreed to instead use cutting-edge digital production technologies for Succession’s fifth season to seamlessly insert a real, fresh, human turd in all scenes featuring Logan Roy. (main picture)

“With the public now knowing what they know following the bucket dumped by James Murdoch, having a lump of real human faeces play Logan – or Rupert – is really the only way to make the character believable,” Cox said.

“I am very relaxed about my decision to vacate the role. I’m sure the piece of shit will do the piece of shit justice,” he told me.
