Dozens of Australia’s elite male footballers from all codes have rushed to condemn Matildas’ captain Sam Kerr following revelations about her behaviour exposed in her London court case.

Representatives from National Rugby League (NRL) franchises, Australian Football League (AFL) clubs, as well as Australian Rugby Union (ARU) representative players, and members of the Socceroos have signed a joint open letter to Kerr urging her to “lift her game”.

“I can speak confidently on behalf of all the guys who’ve signed the open letter when I say I was very, very disappointed with Sam as I followed the evidence in the London case,” a prominent NRL player who did not wish to be identified told The Bug.

“We all thought she could do much better, after all she – like us – is a role model for young Aussies.

“All the blokes are very disappointed that Kerr seemed only slightly pissed in the video played to the court.

“She obviously hadn’t vomited enough to stain her own clothes, and there was no evidence given to suggest that she’d pissed in the cab or out its window, or even pissed her own pants.

“She didn’t get nude and expose herself in public, she clearly hadn’t snorted a line or two of coke, and neither was there any suggestion that she’d sexually assaulted a young woman while on the night out in question.

“On top of all that, her efforts at racial abuse were quite frankly pathetic. Was any jury ever going to rule that calling a white guy white was racist?

“She just hasn’t met the standards Aussie fans expect of their footy heroes,” the unidentified player said.

He said signatories to the letter had offered Kerr remedial action and ongoing support.

“A few of us have already thrown her a party (main picture) at which we’ve tried to train her up to the standards of behaviour – or misbehaviour to be precise – that me and the other guys achieve on our nights out,” the player said.

“I reckon she’s starting to get the message, although she’s naturally having difficulty joining in the ‘elephant walk’.

“But we’re all prepared to stick it out and help her change and I think she knows the consequences if she doesn’t.

“If she wants to keep playing at the elite level and if she wants to keep her perks and big salary package, she needs to smarten herself up and be a lot more like me and the other boys,” he said.
