Dutton denies Oz Day claims

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton says suggestions that he insulted some participants in an Australia Day event in his Dickson electorate north of Brisbane are “fake news”.

Mr Dutton, who was keynote speaker at the citizenship ceremony, had waited outside the venue until after a welcome to country was conducted and yawned loudly while it was being delivered.

Eyewitnesses said when he took to the stage they noted that he had chosen to dress as Captain Arthur Phillip (at top).

They said Mr Dutton had asked if any Aboriginal people were present and invited them to come to the stage where he grabbed each of them and literally rubbed their noses in an Australian flag, well, the top-left corner of it at least.

Mr Dutton allegedly also said that while he doubted any of the indigenous attendees were home owners but if so, they should help to reflect the true meaning of Australia Day by delivering to him their property deeds for distribution to the other attendees.

Mr Dutton later denied any improper behaviour, saying: “Any suggestion to the contrary is fake news. Oh, and anti-Semitic.”
