Will de Minaur/Krygios plan go a head?

Is Australian men’s tennis on the verge of returning to glory on the international stage?

Or put another way, have we always had a long-term male grand champion in our midst without knowing it?

These intriguing questions are now front and centre after telling comments by Alex de Minaur at Melbourne Park last night and the intervention of one of the nation’s most respected brain surgeons.

In a frank and sometimes tearful post-match media call after his 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 drubbing at the hands of world No.1 Jannik Sinner, a crestfallen de Minaur admitted he simply did not have the physical size or muscle mass to ever dominate world tennis.

“I know I’ve got a wonderful tennis brain and my will to win each and every rally is probably unsurpassed but look at me,” de Minaur said. “A good wind could blow me off court.”

Watching de Minaur’s comments from his Sydney home was one of the nation’s leading cranial surgeons who asked not to be named just yet but who told The Bug: “It suddenly dawned on me. What if we put de Minaur’s head and brain on Nick Krygios’s body?”

“The guy would be unbeatable and the reality is that Krygios is still only 29 years old.

“Alex de Kryiosaurus could have a swag of grand slams in his trophy cabinet before both his head and body reach Novak Djokovic’s current age.

“And I’m confident the head transplants could be completed safely. I’m available, as are my transplant team, if they are.”

A Tennis Australia spokesperson gave full support to the proposal.

“Mark Edmonston’s Aussie Open win was so long ago I’ve forgotten the year,” he said.

“And have we won a men’s grand slam anywhere this century?

“And I really can’t see us putting all our hopes in Cruz Hewitt.”

The Bug has been unable to contact de Minaur for his reaction to the head-swap plan but someone in Krygios’s camp told us: “Nick thinks the idea is sick!”

The unnamed cranial surgeon said there was only one real downside to his proposal: “What possible future does someone with Krygios’s head, but especially his brain, have on de Minaur’s body?

“Who could find a meaningful job for someone like that?”
