Today I can report exclusively for The Bug reader on some big changes being made by Australia’s television networks to some favourite shows that will once again grace our small screens in 2025.
The changes being made are mainly to the titles of a number of popular programs whose new seasons will start soon.
The ABC has taken a decision to air the new series of Call the Midwife – the British TV medical drama set in East London in the 1950s and 1960s – under a different name this year.
“We’ve got special dispensation for the change from the UK production company that makes it for the BBC and which has produced all 150 series of the show,” an ABC source told me.
“I think it’s been 150, might be 15 series, but it certainly feels like there’s been 150.
“It’s been going on for so long now that the new 2025 season will be resorting to the old favourite of many long-running series by having some celebrity guest appearances which I can’t divulge just yet. (main picture)
“One of the ABC’s internal consultative committees – I forget which one, there are so many – took exception to the title Call the Midwife.
“The committee members felt it was not only sexist, but didn’t give those who identify as women sufficient agency by implying they were to be beckoned without due consideration for their own immediate personal circumstances and life goals.
“The committee has spent many months debating a new name and has come up with Consult the Minge Whisperer which we think will go unnoticed by the show’s core audience which we know is largely elderly and possibly comatose,” the ABC source said.
Other networks are also making changes to the names of some of their 2025 offerings with Network Ten and the Nine Network both bowing to pressure from government watchdog agencies to ensure the names of some of their popular shows better reflect their content.
From this year Ten will ensure a more honest title for I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here! by changing it to I’m a Has-Been Badly in Need of Publicity!
Nine will screen Married at First Sight from 2025 as Married at First Fight because, as a Nine source told me: “It’s all about the fights and fuckall else really.”
Nine will also rename The Block to The Scott Cam Show following market research findings which, I am advised, showed viewers already thought the title referred to the shape of his head.
