TRUMP TRIAL:
NEW YORK: US President-elect Donald Trump may yet face jail or a hefty fine after a New York judge announced his intention to reconsider his judgement in the Stormy Daniels payoff case.
In May last year Trump was found guilty on 34 felony charges of wrongly concealing as a business expense the US$130,000 payment made to the porn star Daniels to buy her silence during the 2016 presidential campaign about an alleged one-night stand she had with Trump in 2006.
Trump has always denied wrongdoing and had consistently denied ever having sex with Ms Daniels, claiming he was the victim of a “politically weaponised” US Justice Department.
At a hearing this week attended online by Trump with his lawyer (main picture), Judge Juan Merchan announced his decision to give the soon-to-be 47th US President a sentence of unconditional discharge without any punishment.
His ruling means Trump will pay no fine nor spend any time in jail for the offences.
However, this morning Judge Merchan announced that he was reconsidering his decision based on a video recording of Trump’s appearance made available to him after the sentencing hearing.
He said court technicians had enhanced the audio levels of the recording on which the judge can be heard making his ruling of unconditional discharge.
When he does so, Trump leans towards his lawyer and says: “Unconditional discharge? That’s what I gave Stormy. Talk about coincidence!”
Judge Merchan said he was not aware of the remark at the time of making his ruling but would now recall the case for further consideration.
