NSW cops probe animal thefts

SYDNEY: NSW Police say they are puzzled by the theft of creatures from two of Sydney’s major animal attractions.

A spokesperson for NSW Police said animals had been reported stolen from Taronga Park Zoo at Mosman and the Sea Life Sydney Aquarium at Darling Harbour following break-ins at the weekend.

“Police are appealing for any information from the public to help locate the month-old reindeer stolen from Taronga Park Zoo and about a dozen live squid taken from the Sea Life Aquarium,” the spokesperson said. (main picture)

“The only information we have to go an at the moment is some very grainy security camera footage showing a man driving away from both sites in a panel van with Queensland rego plates,” the spokesperson said.

WASHINGTON DC: US President-elect Donald Trump has named veteran movie and TV star Dick Van Dyke as his pick for Ambassador to Britain.

Mr Trump said he had good reasons for appointing the 99-year-old Van Dyke (below) – a Trump critic – to the post.

“I know Dick maybe doesn’t like me, but I like him which is more important,” Trump said. “I’ve always liked him and I’ve known from when I was just a teenager and first saw him in Mary Poppins, that he speaks their language, so he should do well.”

BRISBANE: The Bug’s finance and investment advice columnist Morrie Bezzle is expected to appear in court in Brisbane later today on charges arising from complaints made to the Queensland Office of Fair Trading (OFT).

A Queensland Police spokesperson said officers had this morning accompanied OFT staff to an inner-northside warehouse where they had arrested Mr Bezzle. (below)

“Officers went to the warehouse after receiving dozens of online and telephone complaints from people who had paid several hundred dollars each to attend what they were told would be a lavish and fully catered ‘champagne’ Golden Globes-watching party,” the spokesperson said.

“Police will allege that those in attendance were misled by Bezzle who had provided only marked-down and microwaved frozen Christmas turkey TV dinners – some past their use-by dates – and ‘bottomless champagne’ which Bezzle sourced from flagons of moselle and a bicycle pump found at the premises.

“Attendees also complained that the ‘personal appearances’ by stars of Golden Globe-nominated TV shows such as Baby Reindeer and The Squid Game turned out to be several live but clearly distressed animals.

“More allegations will likely be aired in court once animal welfare officers from the RSPCA furnish police with a report on the condition of the animals seized at the event,” the spokesperson said.
