Costello story prompts ACCC probe

The nation’s competition watchdog is about to launch an investigation into News Crap Australia following publication of its latest edition of The Weekend Australian on Saturday.

It is understood that the investigation by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) will examine the allegedly misleading presentation of the newspaper’s front-page lead story. (below)

Sources within the ACCC said the story was built around comments by former federal treasurer and deputy Liberal Party leader Peter Costello (in main picture taken by a News Crap Australia reporter at Canberra Airport earlier this year) who lashed the Labor Party federal government’s management of the Australian economy.

“Our investigators noticed the term ‘exclusive’ had been applied to the story when everyone in the nation knows that Mr Costello is ready willing and able to smear a smirk on his flabby face and wobble his jowls while bagging the Labor Party for anyone who’ll listen,” an ACCC source said.

“What on earth could be ‘exclusive’ about Peter Costello attacking the Labor Party government of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese?

“In addition, what’s ‘exclusive’ about The Australian doing the same? That’s why we believe the presentation of the story misleads consumers, especially the subscribers of hard-copy edition of The Weekend Australian.

The source said the ACCC investigation may result in orders forcing News Crap Australia to reimburse all subscribers to The Australian print editions the cost of a daily copy.

“This penalty could run into…oh, several dollars by our estimates,” the source said.
