Peter would be so proud!

Who the fuck indeed!

Let’s roll the tape at some 16 minutes in to last night’s (Saturday’s) 6pm bulletin from Nine LNPNews Queensland to see exactly what I’m ranting about.

Newsreader Wendy Kingston: “The Federal government is facing fresh criticism tonight, accused of fuelling inflation as new figures show Australians are spending more this Christmas season”.

Wow! The Albanese government can’t take a trick, can it? An election just around the New Year corner and it’s facing fresh criticism and it’s being accused of something dreadful.

Like you BUGgers out there who watched that news service, I was on the edge of my seat to see just who these critics/accusers were and exactly what Albanese’s mob had done to fuel inflation because we’re all rather recklessly spending a bit more at Christmas.

Reporter Claudia Vrdoljak then kicks off her story with a lengthy, minute-plus, segment on assistant Treasurer Stephen Jones explaining how a new government mandate was ensuring cash would still be king this Christmas for those who prefer to use the folding and jangling stuff.

The mystery just deepened! Surely some old fogies still buying their Xmas presents with cash can’t somehow be fuelling inflation that Albanese and Co. can rightly be blamed for?

But wait, here it comes …. eventually! The story that didn’t deserve that pointed, pro-LNP leadin from our newsreader finally gets an airing with the LNP’s Jane Hume saying that prices have gone up over 15 per cent over the past three years.

“No wonder Australians are spending more; they have to spend more,” she said.

So okay then …. no relevant or direct comment from Hume that warranted Kingston’s over-the-top, pro-LNP leadin.

We’re left with Vrdoljak engaging in a final bit of editorialising all on her lonesome, in the process absolving Xmas present buyers of any blame: “The Coalition blaming additional government spending on driving up costs!”

Seeing Hume said no such thing, we can only assume Vrdoljak was simply repeating something she heard some other time that stuck with her for some reason.

Maybe Nine News needed to run Written and spoken Claudia Vrdoljak for the LNP under those final observations of hers?

Does any BUGger out there seriously believe Kingston’s lead-in would have been written and read out by that poor women were an LNP government facing a tight election tussle early next year?

My best guess is that the entire segment would have been pitched around how, despite the fact we’re all doing it just a teeny, weeny, bit tough, we still have some money to spend at Christmas, a good sign that the economy is rebounding and that the government has its setting right.

Peter Costello may have long left the building but he surely must be proud as Nine Entertainment Co. and its TV news bulletins around the country continue their lurch to the right.
