Chair of the judging panel, The Bug’s investment and financial advice columnist Morrie Bezzle, has encouraged The Bug reader to lodge nominations for the prestigious award whose winner would be announced on Australinvasion Day on 26 January next year.

Speaking in Brisbane during a break in Federal Court proceedings where he is facing a range of tax fraud charges (below), Mr Bezzle said the 2024 winner would again be difficult to pick.

“The judging panel will no doubt once again have a wide field of contenders to consider for outstanding work performed during 2024,” he said.

“There are the usual suspects like the Prime Minister Anthony Albanese for his solid work in … ahh… hmmm… yeah, maybe I’ll come back to that one.

“Then there’s Opposition Leader Peter Dutton who has kicked goals and heads all year with his visionary alternative policies for uniting a divided nation such as… aah… hmmm …

“Perhaps I might also come back to… No wait! Nuclear power! That’s it. Oh and demonising immigrants.

“Yep, the old Dutts knows which side his white bread is buttered on which makes him a real contender for Aussie of the Year.”

Ms Bezzle said The Bug’s 2024 Australian of the Year would join a select group of past winners. (below)

“The first award for 2018 was given to business and political visionary Clive Palmer, whom I’m proud to call a friend despite evidence to the contrary given by me under oath in some previous court proceedings.

“The award for 2019 went to that little Aussie battler, teenage environmental activist Scomo Turdberg for her unique advocacy of using more coal and other fossil fuels as a way to exhaust supplies so we can all get on with fighting climate change sooner – in around 2097 if her projections are accurate.

“Other previous winners have been National Party Senator Bridget McKenzie, News Crap Australia’s chief political comedy writer James Morrow, and former PM Scotty Morrison who was given six awards to recognise his work in various cabinet posts in his own government.

“In January this year I was proud to announce another former PM, Tony Abbott, as Australian of the Year for 2023 for his work which also brought Australians together by defeating the Voice to Parliament referendum.” (below)

Mr Bezzle said tickets to the 26 January award presentation ceremony, to be held either at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre at South Bank or the Arthur Gorrie Remand Centre near Ipswich depending on his commitments at the time, were selling fast.
