FEDERAL POLITICS:
LOGAN CITY, Queensland: Federal Treasurer Jim Chalmers will hopefully be released from a local hospital here shortly after having his feelings hurt terribly badly by former Speaker Bronwyn Bishop yesterday.
The member for Rankin put on a brave face for our cameras as he was being readied for discharge but couldn’t help dwelling on the incident that led to his collapse at his electoral office late on Thursday.
“She called me a snake,” Chalmers hissed before flashing the big smile captured above by our senior staff photographer.
The Treasurer was referring to the moment his staff alerted him to comments by the former House Speaker on a Sky LNPNews panel, where Bishop took a stab at the Treasurer for his “own version of dishonesty”.

Declaring that the budget update on Wednesday had revealed the Albanese government had set aside $5.5 billion to spend in the lead-up to the next election, Bishop told Sky LNPNews host James Macpherson: “There was no way in the world that the snake Chalmers was going to bring down another budget.
“He [Chalmers] was there today with his own version of dishonesty.”
The Treasurer told our reporter: “I’ve been in this game long enough to know it’s a rough and tumble existence that can get very fiery but surely there must be limits to our behaviour?
“She can say anything she likes about my stewardship of the Australian economy but to call me a snake! Is there anything lower than that?
“She called me a snake,” he hissed once more, a frown reappearing and his eyes clouding over again, jeopardising his chances for a quick discharge as staff rushed forward to calm him down, one senior registered nurse with decades of training urging Chalmers “to let it go”.
