Federal Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has made a surprise election promise to counter criticisms of his recent remarks declaring he would not stand in front of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islands’ flags as prime minister.
At a news conference in Brisbane this morning Mr Dutton again justified his position by suggesting any Australian prime minister needed to represent all Australians.
“If elected to office next year I want to bring Australians together and promote greater harmony in Australian society and to inject decency and respect into our public discourse,” he said.
“We have seen too much abuse and division in our community thanks to the radical lefty woke anti-Semitic trans-loving heathen corrupt Albanese Labor government that continues to allow waves of people to settle here and take our jobs.
“I have the Right vision for our country’s future. My vision is to make Australia great again and to lead a united nation, one nation if you like, not to be confused with the radical lefty woke anti-Semitic trans-loving heathen corrupt United Nations.
“Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island flags simply promote division and make Australians descended from the waves of people who’ve settled here since the First Fleet feel guilty. That’s not the white path for our country.”
Mr Dutton then surprised reporters by announcing that if he were prime minister he would support moves for an entirely new Australian flag.
“I have my own preferred green and gold design,” he said, unveiling a proposed new flag. (main picture)
“I’m prepared to put my favoured flag up against any other proposals before using federal powers to mandate its use in the interests of national unity,” he said.
