Today I can reveal exclusively for The Bug reader that organisers of the Golden Globes Awards say they will drastically overhaul the nomination process for 2025 following persistent criticisms of its shortlisting process.
A source within the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) which runs the annual awards told me that the association was concerned at the trend in recent years that the announcement of the films nominated for Golden Globes had invariably generated claims that certain movies had been “snubbed”. “Unfortunately with the advent of social media, more and more people are expressing their disappointment when their personally favoured films are not listed as nominees in the many and varied award categories,” the source said.
“We saw that yet again just this week when the latest award nominees for 2024 were announced.
“If you add up all the Golden Globe categories for films, actors, supporting actors, directors, and others involved in the film-making process, there are about 40 awards we judge each year.
“So it is only logical that not all personal favourites of fans or critics can be accommodated in the shortlisted nominations which leads to claims that they are being ‘snubbed’.”
To avoid the problem, next year the HFPA will abandon shortlists of nominated films and simply open up the competition in all categories to all of the estimated 7,000 feature films produced each year around the world.
“Of course this means that Golden Globe judges will need to view and assess all 7,000 films so the new system will inevitably mean a longer judging process and will certainly delay the announcement of winners.
“So while we will go ahead with the 2025 Gold Globe Awards, we estimate that the actual announcement of the winners may not take place until around 2028 or maybe even 2029.
“But at least nobody will be able to claim their film was snubbed by the nomination process,” my source told me.
