Editor-in-chief takes leave

MEDIA NEWS:

Editor-in-chief of News Crap Australia’s national broadshit The Australian, Michelle Gunn, has taken extended indefinite leave.

A source within The Australian said Ms Gunn had been “haunted” by the treatment given by the newspaper to Friday’s front-page story on Australia’s decision to vote with 156 other countries at the United Nations in favour of a resolution asking Israel to vacate Palestinian territories it has been occupying illegally. “While the story ticked all the News Crap Australia boxes – being blatantly and unquestioningly pro-Israel, pro-Netanyahu even though he is a genocidal criminal, and anti-Labor, of course – Michelle knew on Thursday night before giving the go-ahead to publish that the story based on comments by a spokesperson for Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu had holes in it,” the source said.

“For a start, while it attacked the Albanese Government’s vote, it downplayed the fact that the resolution was passed by 157 votes to eight.

“While the Netanyahu spokesperson suggested Australia’s vote meant our nation may no longer be a ‘key ally’ of Israel, the story didn’t mention if the spokesperson was asked if the same judgement had been made about the UK, Canada, New Zealand, France, or Germany and other western democracies who also backed the resolution.

“Neither, it seems, was the spokesperson asked if those countries were now also regarded as ‘rewarding terrorism’ by their UN votes.

“Michelle was struggling before publication with the whole idea of giving prominence to such a flimsy story. She knew in her own heart that there was a better story and a better headline to be had. (main picture)

“But, as always, she made an independent editorial judgement to faithfully follow the Murdoch media’s pro-Israel and by extension pro-genocide line come hell or high death tolls of innocent men, women, and children.

“After the paper hit the streets on Friday morning she said she still felt haunted by the decision to run with the story so she went to a local doctor near News Crap Australia’s Sydney offices in Surry Hills.

“She thought at first that the doctor – who wasn’t her regular GP – was asking her if the story had disrupted her sleep on Thursday night.

“But what he actually said after she identified herself to him was: ‘How do you sleep at night?’

“She immediately left the clinic and went home then called in to say she’ll be on leave until further notice,” the source said.
