Trump changes swearing-in

WASHINGTON DC: Constitutional lawyers are examining the validity of radical changes Donald Trump is seeking to the swearing-in ceremony to take place on 20 January next year marking the start of his term as 47th President of the United States.

A source within the Trump presidential transition team said in preparation for the inauguration the President-elect had handed organisers a copy of the US Constitution with his personal comments on relevant sections. (main picture)

Among the changes Trump wants is to have the oath of office administered by someone other than US Supreme Court Justice John Roberts.

“While it’s true that the Constitution doesn’t specify who administers the oath, the President-elect is getting some pushback on his idea of having former Fox News host Tucker Carlson do it,” the source said.

“Alternatively, he has floated the idea of administering the oath to himself. He prefers the latter approach because it gives him the chance to take the oath, then turn to the outgoing President and say: ‘Joe, you’re fired.’

“But the President-elect is also seeking to change the title ‘Vice-President’ in the oath to be taken by JD Vance, possibly administered by Elon Musk.

“He wants JD Vance to be sworn in and serve the coming four-year term not as the Vice-President but as the ‘Not President’.

“Most people might think it’s a change he wants because of his well-known desire to always be the centre of attention and his dislike of sharing any public spotlight.

“It’s a bit of that, but he really wants to be sworn in as both President and Vice President – without the hyphen.

“Don’t forget that back in July the Supreme Court (below) ruled that US Presidents are virtually immune from criminal prosecution.

“The President-elect believes that as Vice President he will constitutionally be President in charge of vice, so he can indulge in all sorts of illegal, predatory, sexual behaviour and he’ll never face any consequences.

“Despite strong concerns expressed by some among his transition team, he is pushing ahead with the idea and says he has watertight legal advice from Rudy Giuliani supporting his position,” the source said.
