Overnight polling shows a disconnect between action taken by the Senate against Victorian independent Senator Lidia Thorpe and public views on her behaviour toward One Nation leader Senator Aunty Pauline Hanson.
Senator Thorpe (unmistakably left in main picture) was suspended yesterday on a vote of Senators for her action in tearing up a motion by Queensland Senator Aunty Pauline Hanson (far right and far right in main picture) critical of independent and former Labor Party West Australian Senator Fatima Payman. In her motion Senator Hanson alleged that Afghanistan-born Senator Paymen could be in breach of Section 44 of the Constitution by failing to have taken all necessary steps to renounce her original citizenship which, if correct, would force her to quit the Senate.
Senator Thorpe claimed the motion was racist and approached Senator Hanson’s desk where she tore up the sheet of paper containing the motion and then threw the pieces in the face of the One Nation leader.
The Senate then voted to suspend Senator Thorpe from the chamber today, what is expected to be the last sitting day of 2024 and possibly for the current parliamentary term.
But a special poll taken overnight for The Bug showed voters supported Senator Thorpe’s action with a majority saying they admired her actions in confronting Senator Hanson.
A common response by respondents was: “Senator Thorpe does what I and many other people are thinking.”
For her part, Senator Hanson, national non-aunty leader of the One Nation white indigenous Putdowndarkies tribe that has proudly roamed the fertile plains of the Lockyer Valley for years, says that as a white indigenous representative she was shocked to be subjected to a “racist and possibly fatal attack” by Senator Thorpe.
“My jugular vein could have easily been severed by a paper cut as a result of Senator Thorpe’s actions,” she said.
“But once again I believe I was protected from harm by my clan’s spirit animal, the whistling dog.
“The fact is that this was yet another attempt to assassinate me so I will today be updating the video message I recorded some years back which is to be released if and when I am murdered for the stands I have taken in the interest of other white indigenous Australians,” Senator Hanson said.
