Speculation over a possible early federal election has sparked disquiet within the ranks of federal Labor Party MPs over the leadership of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
Several Labor Party MPs who did not wish to named questioned Mr Albanese’s handling of the public debate over an election date, with some speculating on the possibility of a change at the top of the government.
“Unfortunately Albo has pretty much bungled a lot of sensitive and politically critical issues,” one MP said. “The current discussion on an election date is just one of them.
“The big issue is that he and Treasurer Jim Chalmers continue to wring their hands over the Reserve Bank’s refusal to drop interest rates, yet they won’t use the powers available to them to direct the bank to do so.”
Another MP pointed to the government’s decision to prioritise election campaign funding laws.
“In the public’s mind the planned new laws give buckets of taxpayer funding to the bigger parties to make life easier for them, but do nothing to address people’s own cost-of-living problems,” the MP said.
“The PM has stuffed up the handling of foreign student quotas, internet policing laws, and in the public’s mind Albo doesn’t seem interested in doing anything to rein in online gambling ads that annoy shit out of everyone, bar him apparently.
“Unfortunately the PM’s mishandling of these issues, on top of his total fuck-up of the Voice to Parliament referendum, means voters on the right are being drawn to Peter Dutton and those on the left are being attracted to the Greens’ simple messages,” said
Another MP summed up caucus concerns on the current debate over the 2025 election date.
“Many of my colleagues are pondering the real possibility of initiating a spill of the Labor Party leadership and the very issue of the next election date is fuelling that possibility,” they said.
When questioned what most concerned MPs about the election timing, the MP replied: “Basically I and many of my colleagues are afraid that Albo will fuck up the election date too.
“It’s not so much a fear that he will go to the polls in February or March, it’s more about the very real possibility that he might set out from The Lodge any morning now and ask the Governor-General to dissolve the parliament and call an election – for a Wednesday,” the senior MP said.
