Mr Trump is understood to be very happy with the work so far by Mr Musk who is expected to be handed the job of overseeing government cost-cutting.

“ Brilliant Elon very quickly explained the major elements behind what he has guaranteed will be a highly successful government cost-cutting plan,” a source within the Trump transition team said on condition of anonymity.

“He sat down with the President-elect to run him through his ideas which were built around some very simple concepts.

“Elon explained that for decades nobody sitting in the White House had cut costs but instead had allowed government spending to skyrocket – he does love rocket analogies.

“But he told President Trump that after he is sworn in again next January, he will have a golden opportunity to cut the US federal Budget with some very simple steps.

“He told the President that governments get money to spend from pretty much just one source – taxpayers’ pockets.

“Elon’s argument is that if taxpayers pay less tax then the government automatically has less money to spend, so instantaneously you can achieve a cut in the cost of running the government.

“He further advised the President that if he really wanted fast results, then the best way to achieve them is to have taxpayers pay no tax at all.

“What’s more, if the President wants to make astronomical and instantaneous savings in US Federal Budget outlays, then he needs to make sure multi-millionaires and especially multi-billionaires pay zero tax.

“President Trump was very taken by the plan and has committed to implement it as soon as he can after his inauguration.”

The source said Mr Trump was not known for his grasp of economic principles or details, so other members of the Trump transition team had especially noted just how many ideas and concepts Elon Musk had been able to explain and have adopted by the President-elect.

“In fact a few of us on the transition team believe Elon may actually be the previously unknown guy who convinced Mr Trump that tariffs are paid by China and other nations selling goods into the USA, not American consumers,” the source said. “He really is that good.”
