No doubt many of us sincerely hoped Anthony Albanese was wearing Donald Trump-strength diapers when the US presidential election results started rolling in.
And that he’s kept wearing them religiously since the key reasons for Trump’s White House return have become obvious.
The bottom line – sorry! – is that the working class of the US are hurting badly through cost of living pressures and Albanese would be forgiven for filling those diapers frequently as he ponders his chances at the federal poll in April or May next year.
Sure, racism and misogyny played a role in the US poll but at least Albanese in the months ahead only has to deal with the former: on immigration that also played a role in the US and no doubt Albanese’s “racist and divisive” Voice debacle will also get a rerun. But it’s the economy, stupid, and election results around the world are showing voters are taking their basketball bats to incumbent governments, even ones that appear to be doing a reasonable job of macro economic management.
And you know what? I’m truly buggered to see what Albanese and his ministers can say or do to avoid falling into minority at best next year, and at worst losing government after one term.
Things look decidedly grim for him. The last two Newspolls have the LNP leading 51-49 on two-party-preferred, with Labor on a persistently low primary vote.
And this trend away from the government has happened despite the millions of dollars it has spent advertising its stage-three tax changes that favoured all tax brackets, and various cost-of-living measures. It is happening despite the government bringing in two surpluses in a row and managing to reduce inflation from “having a six in front of it to now having a two in front of it”.
The Queensland Labor government has just been turfed out despite bringing in two surpluses in a row and spending many millions of dollars in advertising on their cost-of-living relief measures. Sound familiar? Three terms – a decade in power – would have been a factor there that Albanese doesn’t have to contend with.
Both electorates appear not to be listening to these government boasts. Voters are more interested in the bottom line of their weekly supermarket bill and how they’re going to pay quarterly utilities bills and stump up for mortgage repayments or rent due. It’s a cruel, post COVID-19 world out there.
As stated above, I don’t really have much of an idea as to what Albanese and his mob can do to turn things around. For Albanese, not buying another expensive hilltop, seaside home would help. Ditto for staying away from chairman’s lounges. I’ve given up on Albanese and his team being all that less Zionist than Dutton and Co. when it comes to the ongoing genocide in Gaza.
The bottom line again – sorry! – is that Americans have just voted for a repulsive, ignorant, lying, racist, right-wing cunt with lazy, shit, policies that will do working-class people no good at all and largely favour the already rich.
There’s every chance the same thing’s going to happen here.
