SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY:
Scientists from the renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) are this morning flying from the USA to Sydney for the second time this year to conduct experiments aimed at discovering the world’s most silent silence.
Head of MIT’s audio research laboratory, Professor Mike Rophone, and team of technicians and researchers are expected to land at Sydney International Airport this morning.
An MIT spokesperson said the scientists would head straight to Holt Street at Surry Hills where sensitive recording equipment worth millions of dollars would be set up in the newsroom of The Australian newspaper.
“The aim of the trip is to record a complete absence of sound, or in other words, the deepest silence ever not heard which, we admit, is a hard concept to grasp,” the spokesperson said.
“Nevertheless the MIT team made arrangements as soon as they heard US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin’s weekend statements stepping up US administration calls urging Israel to scale back on its attacks in Gaza and, more recently, Lebanon in the interests of pursuing a ceasefire. (below)

“Even uttering the C-word has been enough to bring a barrage of criticism and allegations of anti-Semitism by The Australian against Labor Party figures, the Greens, or anyone not reciting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s talking points.
“Anyone who went further and dared to suggest Israel should wind back its genocidal bombardments fared worse, with the Murdoch-owned paper rolling out the very large-bore weapons it has at its disposal such as Gerard Henderson.
“So Professor Rophone is pleased that an opportunity has arisen to head back to Australia where once again he will set up his super-sensitive equipment in The Australian’s newsroom, this time to capture its response – or non-response – to Mr Austin’s comments.”
As reported by The Bug at the time, the MIT team led by Professor Rophone was in Australia in June this year to capture what up until then was the world’s most silent silence following revelations that the leader of the Australian version of the far-right US Republican Party, Peter Dutton, had billed taxpayers thousands of dollars in travel costs to cosy up to a far-right mining magnate. “The silence the MIT team recorded at the Holt Street newsroom back then was, as the Professor himself jokingly said, deafening,” the MIT spokesperson said.
“He suspects the results of this latest trip will be even more pronounced, or unpronounced to be accurate.”
