Street names spark complaints

COUNCIL NEWS:

The controversy over the failed attempt to change an allegedly offensive name of a thoroughfare in the South Australian town of Penola has sparked a rash of similar complaints on Queensland’s Gold Coast.

In June a resident of the town living in Chinamans Lane complained to the local Wattle Range Shire Council about the name of their street, saying it should be changed because it was offensive. (main picture)

But members of the local council recently voted unanimously to keep the name.

However, publicity about the SA case has prompted numerous similar complaints to the Gold Coast City Council about three streets within its boundaries.

“I can confirm we have received dozens of requests in the past few days to scrap the name ‘Trump Street’ at Pimpama because residents find it offensive,” a spokesperson for the Gold Coast City Council said.

“We have also received hundreds of requests to change ‘Murdoch Street’ in Varsity Lakes, with residents there saying it’s offensive and reflects badly on their neighbourhood and that they are convinced it adversely affects their property prices.

“In addition we have received thousands of letters and phone calls and emails wanting us to change the name ‘Dutton Street’ at Coolangatta for the same reasons.

“That volume of complaints has been rather surprising and we can only conclude that a lot of the messages expressing their dislike of the current name have come from outside the council area since the street has only a dozen or so houses,” the spokesperson said.
