Spokesperson retreats under fire

WASHINGTON DC: The Biden administration has denied claims it has double standards when it comes to its stance on the use of US weapons in the Ukraine-Russia war and the wars being waged by Israel in Gaza and Lebanon.

President Joe Biden’s national security spokesperson, John Kirby, (main picture) today briefed White House reporters on a meeting between Mr Biden and visiting Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Mr Kirby became emotional as he began the briefing by describing “the brave people of Ukraine” and their continued resistance against attacks on their nation by Russian President Vladmir Putin’s military machine.

“To think of the thousands of innocent Ukrainian civilians killed since the Russian invasion, including thousands of children whose lives have been cut short, just makes me…” he sobbed as his voice wavered and trailed off and tears rolled down his cheeks.

Mr Kirby quickly stopped crying when asked why the USA was opposed to Ukraine using American and NATO-supplied weapons to attack military targets deep within Russian territory.

“I can confirm that in this week’s talks President Biden approved more funding for the Ukrainian war effort including long-range missiles but did not approve their use to strike military targets deep in Russian territory,” he said, using a handkerchief to dry the remaining tears on his cheeks.

“The US remains concerned that such a move would provoke a wider war in the region.”

Mr Kirby pocketed his handkerchief when asked why the US tolerated use of American-supplied weaponry by Israel to strike inside Lebanon but remained steadfastly against the same tactic in the Ukraine-Russia conflict.

“It’s an entirely different situation, and let me explain why,” he said before pausing for several minutes, apparently trying to formulate a response.

Mr Kirby appeared shocked when, during the minutes he remained silent, a reporter asked him why the Biden administration did not impose the ceasefire it desired in the Middle East conflicts simply by withholding America-made weapons from Israel or imposing Ukraine-style limits on their use.

“Well… let me…. ahhh…. hmmmm….., let me get back to you on that one,” Mr Kirby began before again drawing his handkerchief from his trouser pocket and rapidly gathering his briefing notes.

“Oh those poor, poor Ukrainian children,” he cried and began sobbing while walking briskly from the briefing room lectern towards the exit and dabbing his eyes until he disappeared from view.
