QUEENSLAND POLITICS:
The Queensland Liberal National Party’s (LNP) policy promise for the October election to implement a public register of child sex offenders has been savagely attacked by a major church.
The policy, released yesterday by LNP leader David Crisafulli, would provide for the release by police of location details of offenders.
The policy proposal was immediately attacked by the Catholic Church of Australia.
Spokesperson for the church, Father Phil Kidler (main picture) said the LNP policy could be “the thin edge of the wedge”.
“Just reporting convicted offenders would be an enormous impost for our church for reasons I suspect most people can understand,” Fr Kidler said.
“God knows where this sort of policy will lead. It’s the thin edge of the wedge. Will the next step be a requirement for us to report the locations of unconvicted child sex offenders?
“We already have enough trouble keeping tabs on their whereabouts because we’ve had a policy of shuttling them around among dioceses to ensure they are not convicted.
“We usually find out where they are only when a complaint comes to light, but then we’ve usually moved them on again.
“So to expect us to know where exactly they are at any one time, let along their exact address will be an administrative nightmare for us.
“It’s the sort of unwelcome and unnecessary red tape we can do without,” Fr Kidler said.
