News tyro shocked by sacking

MEDIA NEWS:

A young Sydney man keen to start a career in journalism has been left bewildered after being sacked on his first day on the job at News Crap Australia.

Graham Perkin said he was excited to start a cadetship with the national broadshit The Australian in its Sydney newsroom on Thursday.

“It was dream come true,” Mr Perkin told The Bug after he had removed his belongings from the paper’s Surry Hills building. (main picture)

“I was really looking forward to working on some big and meaningful stories.

“My first day could not have been going any better because I was asked to attend the morning news conference with senior editors to discuss possible stories we should cover.

“They even went around the room seeking ideas and that’s when things unfortunately fell apart.

“I said we should go all out and cover the secret legal battle within the Murdoch family that’s being played out in US courts over Rupert Murdoch’s efforts to change a key family trust to ensure right-wing son Lachlan keeps control of the family’s extensive media investments after Rupert pops off.

“At first I thought the silence around the room was an expression of awe or admiration for me and my idea to tackle a report of vast public interest without fear or favour.

“But the meeting was shut down immediately and we all went back to our desks and it wasn’t long before some guy from HR came up to me and gave me a letter of dismissal.”

Mr Perkin said he told the HR officer that his idea for the Murdoch family story should have been pursued if News Crap Australia was genuine in its support of the national Your Right to Know campaign mounted by it and other media organisations to battle secrecy and cover-ups of matters of public interest.

“The HR bloke just laughed and as we walked through the newsroom to the front door he pointed to the relevant sign that he said applied when it came to covering Murdoch family activities. (below)

“I guess now I’ll just have to look for a job in a real news organisation and not a News organisation,” Mr Perkin said.
