Boost for Libs as Teals quit!

FEDERAL POLITICS:

The LNP’s chances of winning the next federal election have been boosted by the news that all successful Teals candidates from 2022 are now expected not to recontest the 2025 poll.

Their collective decisions to quit Parliament follow stinging criticism of their performances from arguably Australia’s foremost politics commentator and analyst.

Zali Steggall, Allegra Spender, Monique Ryan, Kate Chaney, Zoe Daniel and Sophie Scamps are among the Teals-aligned or independent candidates expected to become one-term wonders after being excoriated by Institute of Public Affairs’ Daniel Wild (below, far right).

Wild used an appearance on Sky LNPNews host Rita Panahi’s program to slam the Teals, calling them “cashed up Greens”.

“They vote with the Greens 60 per cent of the time, Coalition a third of the time,” said Mr Wild, who clearly remains very, very, upset that these people won electorates that were once ultra safe seats that were the jewels in the Liberal Party crown.

“How are they really independent and representing the views of their community?” Wild asked Panahi.

“They are not interested in debating the substance of the issues.”

Spokespersons for some of those MHRs told The Bug: “They got elected largely on centrist and progressive policies, including a belief that the threat of climate change is real and needed to be addressed by the urgent phasing out of fossil fuels.

“Even so, they didn’t realise they have voted with the Greens 60 per cent of the time and they are truly sorry for that, which of course is largely behind their decisions to pull the pin on their parliamentary careers.”
