Morrison seeks court delay

THE COURTS:

Lawyers for former prime minister Scott Morrison have asked the West Australian Supreme Court to postpone his appearance as a witness in the defamation case brought against former federal ministerial staffer Brittany Higgins by her ex-boss, former defence minister Senator Linda Reynolds.

Mr Morrison had been expected to take the witness stand tomorrow to be quizzed about his apology in the Federal Parliament to Ms Higgins, his public rebuke of Senator Reynolds, and claims that he misled parliament over the Bruce Lehrmann/Higgins scandal.

But Mr Morrison’s lawyers have applied to the court for a delay to enable them to finish briefing him.

“We’ve had tremendous trouble in preparing our client for court because his pants keep bursting into flames whenever he answers any of our questions,” solicitor Costa Pentle told The Bug legal affairs reporter.

“Even when we tried to explain to him basic procedures such as taking the oath as a witness to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, his pants just go up in flames.

“We hope the court will grant a delay even if it is just for a day so we can get him some fireproof pants,” Mr Pentle (at left in main picture) said.

Mr Morrison said he understood the delay was necessary but he looked forward to having his day in court and felt well prepared “after days of being coached” by his lawyers.

“Being coached by them has been a useful exercise, albeit the coaching has been interrupted by smoke alarms and office sprinkler systems going off,” he said.

“The coaching I have received from them has been very valuable and I feel that after all that coaching I am ready to take the stand later this week.”

When The Bug’s reporter suggested to him that it was illegal for his lawyer to coach a witness Mr Morrison replied: “I never said they were coaching me.”
