Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is planning to call a snap election to capitalise on what Labor Party insiders describe as “the general goodwill and optimism” generated by Australia’s early gold-medal performances at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
Despite his initial failure earlier today to have the federal parliament dissolved and head to the polls, a spokesperson said Mr Albanese would make another attempt this afternoon.
Journalists in Canberra were caught flatfooted when Mr Albanese decided to leave his official residence, The Lodge, shortly after dawn and head to Government House at Yarralumla where he asked Governor-General …… [Note to subs: Can’t think of the G-G’s name. Can someone fill it in?]…. to formally dissolve both house of the federal parliament.
His decision was taken as soon as he saw Australia leading the overnight official Olympic medal tally with three gold and two silver medals – ahead of sporting powerhouses China and the USA. (below)

A spokesperson for the PM said Mr Albanese had taken the decision so early today that the driver of his official ComCar limousine C1 was not awake let alone on duty.
“That didn’t stop the PM and he decided to drive himself out to Yarralumla (main picture) even though he was still in his pyjamas,” the spokesperson said.
“Unfortunately when he got to Yarralumla he was told the Governor-General, who’s name escapes me just now, was asleep so he had to cool his heels for an hour or so.
“Eventually he briefed the G-G but he, or maybe she, refused to grant the double dissolution, mainly because the PM wanted to go to the polls on Tuesday – Wednesday at the latest – before Australia inevitably slips well down the medal ladder.
“The G-G asked for more time to consider the request and to seek formal legal advice, so the PM will head back to Yarralumla this afternoon.
“The press gallery may well think he’ll be announcing a new cabinet line-up this arvo at Yarralumla after the retirements announced yesterday of two minister … err, whatshername and … that other one …. but the PM will hopefully be revealing the July 30 election date,” the spokesperson said.
