WASHINGTON DC: A US political expert says the “softer and less confrontational” response by Donald Trump to President Joe Biden’s decision to quit the presidential race confirms that the former president has “changed for the better” since the attempt on his life little more than a week ago.
Lecturer in politics at the Dan Quayle Skoole of Guvernment at Indiana University, Professor Col Umbus, said he and many of his colleagues continued to be “pleasantly surprised” at the so-called “new” Trump evident since the assassination attempt.
“It is clear from his public appearances including his speech at the Republican Party convention that Donald Trump is a changed man,” Professor Umbus said. “He is clearly far more introspective and far less abrasive than he has been in the past.”
As evidence, Professor Umbus pointed to Mr Trump’s appearance today at a Make American Great Again rally in Ohio after the release of President Biden’s statement.
“Donald Trump did not spend much of his four-hour rally speech speaking about President Biden or his statement quitting the race,” he said.
“He simply called for Mr Biden to undergo an immediate autopsy to determine his fitness to finish his term.
“I was very pleased to see Donald Trump has also toned down the heavy-handed sexist and racist dog-whistling we’ve seen him display in the past.
“This new attitude was especially evident at today’s MAGA rally in his response to news that Vice-President Kamala Harris is the most likely new Democratic Party presidential nominee,” Professor Umbus said.
Trump received a rapturous reception when he took to the stage in blackface make-up, declaring he was “crooked Camel Harris” [sic] (main picture) and possessed “a totally ungrabbable pussy” which sparked cheers and chants of “Fight! Fight! Fight!”.
Trump then went on to say that while President Biden had quit the presidential race, “crooked Camel [sic] will find it impossible to quit her race”, adding an overly theatrical wink at the audience which sparked cheers and chants of “USA! USA! USA!”.
Mr Trump ended the rally by telling the audience that as the presumptive Democratic Party nominee “crooked Camel [sic] is now in our sights, in the cross-hairs, is now the target we need to take out in – or preferably before – November” which sparked cheers and chants of “Kill Camel [sic]!, Kill Camel [sic]!, Kill Camel [sic]!”
Professor Umbus said it remained to be seen if the “new and softer” Trump would last until election day.
