“All of our computers had sand in them!”

The column that has fun with the smaller mistakes and missteps of Australia’s mainstream mediocre; that pays homage to those sweet little fishes that individually don’t amount to a full meal but collectively can cause a tummy upset over the overall state of the once great and noble craft of journalism in this country.

It was one of those harmless little mistakes … yet typical of the ones Mediocre Bytes loves to take the mickey out of.

We first spotted it in The Bug‘s email inbox, seeing we subscribe to the online news site InQueensland (below).

And, sure enough, clicking onto their main site (at top) confirmed this massive data beach.

We had this vision of countless computers by seasides round the world, covered in sand.

There’s an ad on TV at the moment that uses the punch line “That didn’t make sense!” while plugging some product.

Mediocre Bytes put this ABC online promo in much the same boat.

We can sadly report that reading the actual article didn’t really clear up the apparent contradiction in this plug.

In a recent Mediocre Bytes post, we lamented about the widespread use of one vehicle colliding with another, rather than the far more professional “two vehicles collided”.

Sadly, we can turn to the recent ABC’s 7pm television news item reporting that a young lad had died on the Sunshine Coast after “his bicycle collided with a bus.”

Not only has this poor youngster’s life been cut short, he’s been given the major blame for the collision that cost him his life.

We’ll repeat an oft-refrain: is there anyone left in newsrooms around this country teaching the young ‘uns how to write professionally and, you know, proper, like.
